Recent research has linked periodontal issues with other serious health problems such as diabetes, heart attacks and strokes. It is extremely beneficial to visit your dental hygienist regularly, as good oral health is not only important for healthy teeth and gums, but also for your general health. Here, at Wisdom Dental Acton, our experienced dental hygienists in London provide the best dental hygiene services for you.
Each tooth has a root which Is embedded in the jaw bone. The root is anchored to the bone by fibres. The jaw bone is covered by soft gum tissue, which supports the neck of the tooth. Plaque is a film of bacteria which is constantly forming on our teeth. Plaque causes dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal disease (gum disease). Tartar is formed when minerals such as calcium in saliva combine with plaque and make it hard. Once tartar is formed it will have to be removed by your dentist or hygienist
PLAQUE TARTAR HEALTHY GUMS
Gingivitis is the early stages of periodontal disease, where the gums are red, swollen and can bleed easily. Gingivitis can be reversible with professional hygiene treatment and the correct home-care.
Periodontal Disease (Gum disease)
Periodontal disease is inflammation of the tissues, which support teeth and attach them to jaw. If the infection inflammation only involves the soft tissue of the gum it is called gingivitis. Once inflammation reaches underlying bone it is called periodontitis. This is when you get bone loss and teeth can start to become loose.
Common symptoms of gum disease are:
- Bad breath
- Bleeding gums
- Receding gums
- Swollen gums
- Tender gums
- Loose teeth
- Unpleasant taste
Our hygienist will work closely with your dentist to detect and treat early signs of gum disease. Thorough cleaning will be carried out gently and individualised oral health instructions on how to maintain healthy gums will be provided.
‘Airflow’ Stain Removal Treatment
Airflow polishing is our new hygiene cleaning treatment, designed to remove staining caused by tea, coffee, red wine & smoking. Although it is not a whitening treatment, airflow will instantly improve tooth brightness, leaving you with a noticeably sparkling, healthier smile.
The airflow polishing treatment is a high pressured blast of jet water mixed with sodium bicarbonate, aimed through a nozzle on the surface of the tooth. It removes stains and plaque, whilst also being able to get into the small gaps, giving you a really effective clean, leaving you with clean healthy teeth and gums.
How often is hygiene treatment needed?
Depending on each patient individual needs which are discussed, intervals are set to 3,6 or 12 months.
